The Growth of Kibbutzim On the southern shore of Lake Kinneret is Deganyah Alef ( which was originally called Deganyah ) , the first kibbutz in Israel . The kibbutz was founded in 1910 by 12 h . alutzim from Russia who joined together to farm one plot of land . Over time , more cooperative farms were devel- oped throughout Israel . On each kibbutz , the people lived together and shared the work , property , and money . Everyone on the kibbutz would eat their meals together in a communal dining room , and children lived separately from their parents . Infants lived in a baby house where their parents would visit , and older children lived together in a separate building . Deganyah Alef has a study center and museum , the A . D . Gordon Institute , which is devoted to local history , natural history , and archaeology .
