Haifa is the international center for Baha’i , one of the world’s newest religions . There are about 6 million followers of Baha’i in 170 countries . Baha’i was founded in Iran in 1863 . Its followers believe in one God and in the unity of all people , and worship nature’s beauty . The founder of Baha’i , Husayn Ali , lived near Haifa in Acre , pronounced Akko in Hebrew . Although few Baha’i live in Israel , they are required to visit the Baha’i shrine in Haifa at least once in their lifetime . As a Jewish state , Israel seeks to create understanding with its non-Jewish citizens . In 1999 , the Hebrew University in Jerusalem created a teaching and research position for the study of the Baha’i religion and its people .
