Haifa On a clear day you can see Haifa from Caesarea . The city sits atop tree-covered Mount Carmel , which slopes down to the blue Mediterranean . Haifa is often compared with San Francisco . Because of their high elevations , both cities offer breathtaking views of the waters below . And driving around these two cities can give you a roller-coaster feeling in the pit of your stomach as the roads make steep downhill drops before suddenly curving back up . The name of Haifa was first mentioned in the Talmud—the holy texts that contain Jewish law—as a fishing village . Later it was known as a ship-building port . Today , Haifa is Israel’s third-largest city , and its harbor at the foot of the mountain is a busy international port . In addition to the import and export businesses that dot the port area , Haifa is also one of Israel’s high-tech centers . IBM and Intel are among the many companies that have offices there . Obviously , you can’t hire a van to move to Israel ! Instead , furniture is sent by boat in large containers . Most of the containers are unloaded at the port of Haifa ; others are unloaded in Ashdod . Do you remember what moving to Israel is called ? Israel’s exports include cut and polished diamonds , computer software , military equipment , electronic components , medical equipment , citrus fruits , flowers , candy , and clothing . High-tech products are Israel’s leading export . Ashdod , which is on the coast of Israel , south of Tel Aviv , is Israel’s busiest port .
