The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange , founded in 1953 , makes Tel Aviv the financial capital of Israel . The Diamond Exchange , where diamonds are bought and sold , is in Ramat Gan , right outside of Tel Aviv . Today there are malls all over Israel . But for a long time , there was only Dizengoff Center , a large indoor mall in the center of Tel Aviv . The Shuk Every city in Israel has at least one shuk , or outdoor market . But each shuk has its own character . Shuk Hacarmel is Tel Aviv’s largest market . Its stalls are bursting with fresh fruits , vegetables , cheeses , olives , spices , flowers , and baked goods . Peddlers sell old and new clothing , shoelaces , flashlights , and leather goods . Jaffa’s most popular shuk is Shuk Hapishpeshim , Hebrew for “ flea market . ” There you can find clothing , jewelry , old coins , rugs , pottery , copper jugs , and used books in a dozen languages . Israel’s independence was declared on May 14 , 1948 , in what is now Independence Hall in Tel Aviv . Turn to the map on page 4 and label Tel Aviv next to Israel’s Declaration of Independence . Tel Aviv sits northwest of Jerusalem , on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea .
