The Moder n City of Tel Aviv Israelis call Tel Aviv the city that never sleeps . One-third of Israel’s population lives there and in the surrounding areas . Almost every other Israeli comes to Tel Aviv at least once in a while to enjoy its rich cultural life , do business , swim on its beaches , and take advantage of its many sports facilities . Tel Aviv is the home of Israel’s national theater , Habimah . Habimah was founded in Moscow in 1917 ; it moved to Tel Aviv in 1928 , and the theater was built in 1935 . Habimah was the first professional theater company to produce plays in Hebrew . Although it presents plays from around the world , every production is performed in Hebrew . The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is housed next door to Habimah . Can you imagine seeing Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in Hebrew ? H . ayyim Nah . man Bialik H . ayyim Nah . man Bialik ( 1873–1934 ) left Russia to settle in Tel Aviv in 1924 . He greatly influenced the development of modern Hebrew and is considered the national poet of Israel . Many of his children’s and adult poems have been set to music . Bialik lived near the Habimah National Theater on what is now called Rehov . Bialik , or Bialik Street . There were musicians in biblical times , too .
