The New City The New City of Jerusalem surrounds the walls of the Old City . It is filled with must-see places to visit . Here are just a few . When Sir Moses Montefiore , a wealthy British Jew , visited Jerusalem in the mid-1800 s , he was horrified by the crowded , unsanitary conditions in the Old City . Hoping to improve the living conditions of Jerusalem’s Jews , in 1860 he established Mishkenot She’ananim , a modern settlement outside of its walls . The Israel Museum has many interesting exhibitions—from ancient coins and pottery to displays of modern painting and sculpture . Its holdings include work by Israeli artists , such as Shoshana Heimann , Yosse Stern , and Asim Abu-Shakra , and pieces by international masters such as Rembrandt , Pablo Picasso , and Andy Warhol . The museum’s collection also includes Jewish ceremonial objects as well as wedding clothes worn by Jewish brides and grooms from around the world . Montefiore built a windmill to provide a source of income for the settlement , but the windmill never worked properly . Instead , it became a symbol of the Jewish people’s ability to live outside the walled city . Today , the windmill houses a museum that tells the story of Moses Montefiore’s life .
