Like any big city , Jerusalem is made up of many neighborhoods . The Old City and the New City show the two sides of Jerusalem—ancient and modern . A Divided City After the War of Independence in 1948 , Jerusalem became a divided city . While Israel controlled the western half of the city , Jordan controlled the eastern half , including the Old City . Jews were not permitted to live or visit there . It was not until the Six-Day War in 1967 , when the Israeli army gained control of the eastern part of the city , that Jerusalem was reunited . Walls built in 1948 were torn down ; roads were built to connect the two parts of the city . The Jewish people could once again live , visit , and worship in the Old City . Most importantly , we could pray at the Western Wall ! The Old City The most famous part of Jerusalem is the Old City , a city within walls first built 3 , 000 years ago . Its narrow and winding streets are lined with shops , homes , schools , synagogues , churches , mosques , and museums . The Old City is divided into four sections : the Jewish Quarter , the Armenian Quarter , the Christian Quarter , and the Muslim Quarter . The winding roads are brimming with vendors offering jewelry , pottery , postcards , and gifts . Carts filled with fresh , warm pita bread and sweet pastries , sticky with honey and almonds , tempt passersby with their delicious aromas .
