W hat Is a Jewish State ? Jews around the world celebrated the creation of Medinat Yisrael , the first Jewish state in almost 2 , 000 years . But no one knew what a modern Jewish state should be like . Should only Jews be citizens ? Should non-Jews have no rights ? Should the prime minister be a rabbi ? What holidays should be celebrated in a Jewish state ? only Jewish holidays ? mostly Jewish holidays ? no religious holidays ? Should restaurants serve only kosher food ? Should bakeries be forced to close on Yom Kippur and to sell only matzah on Passover ? An Immigration Story : Ethiopian Jews For centuries , Jews lived in Ethiopia but were cut off from the rest of our people . When Ethiopia suffered a great famine and war in the 1980 s , the Jews became especially eager to leave . In 1984 , the Israeli government and Jewish organizations from North America worked together with the Israeli airline , El Al , to fly the hopeful immigrants from Ethiopia to Israel . Because the Ethiopian government did not want the world to know that almost 8 , 000 of its citizens were fleeing the country , the rescue mission had to be conducted in secret . The mission to bring the Ethiopian Jews to Israel continued into the 1990 s . Almost the entire Jewish community of Ethiopia has been brought to Israel . Today , more than 56 , 000 Ethiopians live in the Jewish state . Ethiopia is 2 , 000 miles from Israel !
