One People , Many Differences Each immigrant group has come to Israel with its own traditions , foods , languages , music , and stories . Jews from Romania , for example , feast on blintzes , while Jews from Iraq enjoy nanaeya , a tasty dish of meatballs with minty sweet-and-sour sauce . Even though we are all Jews , sometimes we have trouble understanding one another . When they arrived in Israel , the Brazilian Jews spoke Portuguese and couldn’t understand the Dutch Jews , who in turn couldn’t understand a word of the Amharic language spoken by the Ethiopian Jews . Jews from Western and Eastern Europe are known as Ashkenazim , while Jews from Portugal , Spain , and other Mediterranean countries are called Sephardim . Sephardim who come from Middle Eastern countries such as Yemen , Syria , Morocco , and Iraq are called Edot Hamizrah . , or Easterners . Although these communities may differ in their complexions , their dress , and their foods , they are united in their common home : Israel .
