Studios turn movie making into a big business . 1927 - In The Jazz Singer ( 1927 ) starring Al Jolson , singing and a few lines of dialogue are added to film for the first time . The " talkies " become popular . 1930 s-l 940 s - This is the Golden Age of Hollywood . Color in movies becomes possible through the use of Technicolor . 1950 s - The movie industry fears losing its audience to television . New technologies are introduced , such as 3-D movies and Cinemascope , a wider screen which is unsuitable for TV . 1970 s - The first blockbuster movies are produced . Audiences are thrilled with stunning special effects .
