"I work ina jeans factory from six o'clock in the morning until nine o ' clock at night . I get two days off every month . The conditions in the factory are terrible . It is hot , noisy and crowded . We do not have breaks and we have to stand all day . My ankles and my knees always hurt . If we go to the toilet without permission , we have to pay 4 . 24 dollars each time . That is about three days' wages . " Nilanthi Noor , 1 7 , Sri Lanka "I work in a big clothes factory . We work hard but we are paid well and the working conditions are good . Our company puts a special symbol ( FT — Fair Trade ) on the labels of the clothes . It shows that the clothes were made under fair working conditions . We hope that all companies will have to put this symbol on the labels . It will protect workers and make sure companies work according to the law . Nobody should have to work in a sweatshop . " Anna Silvio , 23 , Brazil "This is a competitive business . We must advertise . Big names and beautiful faces sell fashion . Companies pay celebrities millions of dollars to advertise sports shoes , cosmetics and clothing . Top fashion magazines have to pay models about 500 dollars an hour . All of this adds to the cost of the product . " Sandy Ricci , advertising agent , New York City "We provide thousands of jobs in our factories in Asia . We moved to Asia because the cost of living is lower there . It's just too expensive to make clothes in Paris or Rome . For example , we sell each shirt for 80 dollars but it only costs 8 dollars to make . We don ' t have a choice if we want to make a profit . " Pierre Le Carre , factory owner from Paris "I work in a big sports shoe factory . I came to the city five years ago from a small village because there was no work for me there . As a factory worker , I earn 91 cents every day ( 25 dollars a month ) . I live in a room with three other workers and pay six dollars a month for the room . I also pay extra to take a bath . I send the rest of the money to my family in the village . " Pablo Mendoza , 21 , El Salvador FAQs appear on many Internet sites . They are a way of presenting information 03 questions and answers .
