56 The Jungle Boy Adapted from The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling ( 1894 ) Mowgli is a boy . He lives in the jungle with wild animals . He sleeps outside under the trees and plays in the river . There are many strange sounds, but Mowgli is not afraid . He runs, climbs and learns . He wants to find out who lives in the jungle . Bagheera is a strong and smart black panther . He likes Mowgli and teaches him jungle lessons . First, Bagheera says, “Listen ! Do you hear that noise ? Something is there . ” Mowgli watches . He sees a snake in the tall grass . Next, Bagheera says, “Look at the ground . If it is dirty and broken, an elephant walks there . Be careful - Elephants do not stop . ” Then, Bagheera says, “Watch the monkeys . They are fast and loud, but they do not listen or learn . Mowgli smiles . “I want to learn all about the jungle ! ” he says . Bagheera says, “You are a smart boy .
