Presenting a profile about a movie director  In this section , you will read profiles of famous movie directors and learn about  the responsibilities of a director in making a film .    Meet the Directors  The following texts are about well-known Him directors . Where would  you expect each text to appear : in a textbook for a filmmaking course ,  in a movie review , or in the program booklet of an awards ceremony ?  Steven Spielberg ( 1946  )  Steven Spielberg deserves all the praise he has  received in his brilliant career as a filmmaker . This  American director is thought to be one of the most  successful and popular directors of all time . Among  the major films he has directed are Jaws , E . T ., Close  Encountersof the Third Kind , Jurassic Park , Schindler ' s  List and Saving Private Ry an .  Steven Spielberg was always fascinated by  filmmaking . As a child , he directed his own  home-made movies . Spielberg ' s first successful film , Duel  ( 1971 ) , was shown on television and later in  European movie theaters . However , his reputation  was really made with the huge blockbuster , Jaws  ( 1975 ) , a thriller about a terrifying man-eating shark .  Spielberg has the ability to show how extraordinary  events affect the normal , quiet lives of ordinary  people .  Join us in honoring this year's award recipient .  Frida ( directed by Julie Taymor )  is the story of Mexican painter  Frida Kahlo . Director Julie  Taymor , who won two Tony  Awards for her direction and  design of the Broadway hit The  Lion King , is best known for the  visual beauty of her productions .  She comes from the world of  theater but her unique artistic  vision is also clearly shown in  Frida , her first Hollywood  production . As brushstrokes on  the painter's canvas slowly turn  into moving images , Kahlo's  paintings and colorful biography  come to life . This is not your  typical biographical movie— it is  a work of art and a must-see .  Init  Movies with a Message : Spike Lee ( 1957- )  Spike Lee studied film at Morehouse College in Atlanta , and at New York University .  A Spike Lee film contains a number of trademarks :  1 ) His films typically include references to baseball , one of his favorite sports .  2 ) He often appears in minor roles .  3 ) Brooklyn , New York , where Lee grew up , is the setting for many of his films .  4 ) Lee often uses the famous ״dolly shot״ in his films , where the camera moves  around the actor to create the effect of the actor spinning against the background .  This talented African- American director has acted in , written , and produced at least  half of the 29 films he has directed . Many of his films are controversial , since they  focus on black-white relations in modern America . For example , in Do The Right  Thing ( 1 989 ) , racial tensions threaten to turn violent in a Brooklyn neighborhood . This memorable film led to discussion about race relations in America .
