The War in Lebanon In June 1982 , Israel sent soldiers into Lebanon because of the growing number of PLO bases in southern Lebanon . The IDF forced the PLO to leave Beirut , the capital , as well as southern Lebanon . Israel stayed on the outskirts of Beirut to prevent the PLO’s return . But many Israelis felt that this military operation had gone on for too long , without enough reason . By early 1985 , the IDF units had withdrawn from most of Lebanon , leaving only a small strip of southern Lebanon under Israeli control . Israel and Her Northern Neighbors Locate Beirut on this map .
