On the southern border , 436 Israelis in bunkers faced 600 , 000 Egyptian soldiers ! Despite great difficulty and the loss of many lives , and with extensive supplies of military equipment from the United States , Israel managed to turn the tide . S . mediation , to the Camp David Accords ( 1978 ) and to the signing of a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt , the first peace treaty between Israel and any of its Arab neighbors . 118 The Israel Air Force Museum is located near Beersheva .
