Proud to Be an Israeli In many ways , Israeli kids are like kids from anywhere else . They go to school , look forward to holidays , and have favorite hobbies like computers , art , and soccer . But an Israeli childhood is also unique , because it is spent in the homeland of the Jewish people––celebrating Jewish holidays as national holidays , e-mailing friends in Hebrew , and studying the Bible in public school . After school , I like to dip a pita bread into h . ummus , a spread made of ground chickpeas and olive oil . I top it off with a dash of za’atar , a mixture of Middle Eastern spices and herbs .
