When the first Maccabiah Games were held in 1932 , 390 athletes from 14 countries took part . Forty-five years later , the 1997 games welcomed over 5 , 500 Jewish athletes from more than 50 countries . Many famous athletes have performed in the Maccabiah Games . The American swimmer Mark Spitz competed in 1969 . Just a few years later , in 1972 , he went on to win a record 7 gold medals for the United States in the international Olympic Games . Although there is no professional baseball played in Israel , some North Americans who made aliyah have organized a Little League . They also run a baseball summer camp for Israeli children . Basketball was played in the Maccabiah Games before it was ever played in the Olympics .
