Safed Safed , pronounced Tzfat in Hebrew , is one of Israel’s most beautiful towns . It stands 2 , 700 feet high in the hills northwest of Lake Kinneret . Safed is one of the few communities in the world where Jews have lived continuously over the centuries . Like Jerusalem and Tiberias , it is a holy place for Jews . Many Spanish Jews settled in Safed after 1492 , the year Columbus arrived in the Americas . They had been forced out of Spain because of extreme anti-Semitism . Among these new settlers were many rabbis and scholars who helped make Safed one of the world centers of Jewish learning . During this period Joseph Karo , a leading rabbi and teacher who lived in Safed , wrote the Shulh . an Aruch , the collection of Jewish laws that , to this day , helps guide our people . The first printing press in the Middle East was set up in Safed in 1563 .
