Tiberias and Lake Kinneret The Sea of Galilee , or Lake Kinneret—or Yam Kinneret in Hebrew—forms the eastern end of the Galilee right below the Golan Heights . On the western shore of Lake Kinneret is the city of Tiberias . Tiberias was founded in the first century CE . It became a center of Jewish learning and the residence of the Sanhedrin , the ancient Jewish high court . In the fourth century , most of what is called the Palestinian Talmud was written in Tiberias . Since then , Tiberias has been considered one of Judaism’s holy cities . Like Father , Like Son Tiberias was founded by the son of King Herod , Herod Antipas . It was built on the remains of the biblical city of Rakkat and was named for the reigning emperor of Rome , Tiberius . Rakkat is mentioned in the book of Joshua : “ And the fortified cities were Zidim , Zeir , and H . ammat , Rakkat , and Kinneret” ( Joshua 19 : 35 ) . Swim in Tiberias’s hot springs ? I don’t think so ! I’m not going to our Purim costume party as a boiled potato . The natural hot springs of Tiberias bring 140 ° F water up from 6 , 500 feet beneath the ground . Like those of the Dead Sea , these mineral-rich waters are thought to have healing powers .
