The Golan Heights The Golan Heights , captured from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War , are at the northeastern edge of Israel . Syria maintains that the Golan Heights belong to her . Israelis remember how the Syrians on the top of the ridge bombarded Jewish settlements before the 1967 war and how the Syrians tried to recapture the Golan Heights in the 1973 Yom Kippur War . This fertile region is dotted with many apple orchards and with vineyards that produce Israel’s finest wines . In some winters , skiers can enjoy the snowy slopes of Mount Hermon , while nature lovers admire the brilliant wildflowers . The Banyas National Park , located at the foot of Mount Hermon , is a spectacular nature preserve . Visitors can climb through Crusader ruins and explore archaeological sites , but the Banyas waterfall is the most breathtaking sight in the park . The Banyas pours into the Dan River to form the Jordan River . In biblical times , Mount Hermon formed Israel’s northern border and was the home of lions and leopards . The Song of Songs , a love poem in the Bible , says , “ Come with me from Lebanon , my bride . Look from the top of Hermon , from the lions ’ dens , from the mountains of the leopards” ( Song of Songs 4 : 8 ) . The Banyas National Park may inspire you as the area’s beauty inspired our ancestor who wrote : “ God , I think of You in this land of the Jordan and the Hermon ... ” ( Psalm 42 : 7 ) .
