Deser t Sites The Negev is full of fascinating places to visit . For example , there are three spectacular craters that were formed millions of years ago from huge cracks in the earth’s surface . Each crater , or machtesh , is a deep valley with steep cliffs on all sides and one water drain . Cut deep into the earth’s crust , the sides of the craters look like rainbow-striped sand sculptures . Not far from Eilat is Timna Valley Park , the site of copper mines that date back to long before King Solomon . The awesome cliffs , canyons , and rock formations were sculpted by nature—the result of many thousands of years of water , wind , and extreme changes in temperature . The Wonders of Souther n Israel The natural world of southern Israel is unique and beautiful . Whether diving with the dolphins , rock climbing on ancient cliffs , or going on a Jeep safari or a camel caravan , a trip to the south is sure to offer new experiences—once-in-a-lifetime memories that could happen only in Israel . Machtesh Ramon , the largest of the Negev’s craters , is 6 miles across and 25 miles long .
