The Arava The road from Eilat to Jerusalem passes through a desert plain called the Arava . The Arava River marks the border between Jordan and Israel , and is bound by two mountain ranges , one in each country . At sunrise , to the east , Jordan’s Edom Mountains blaze in the reflection of the sun . At sunset , to the west , Israel’s Eilat Mountains take on a fiery glow . Spread throughout the valley are small kibbutzim and moshavim—collective farms . The kibbutz and moshav members work hard planting fields , often in intense heat , helping to give life to Ben-Gurion’s dream of a blooming desert . Tourism and industry also provide important sources of income , and Kibbutz Yotvata is known throughout Israel for its large dairy . What Do You Think ? So far , which place in southern Israel is your favorite ? Explain why .
