Salt formations rise out of the Dead Sea and the surrounding land like a sculpture garden . Besides salt , the water is also full of minerals such as potash , magnesium , and bromine . Sulfur fills the air around the Dead Sea with an odor that smells like rotten eggs . Several companies have sprung up in the region to take advantage of the Dead Sea’s mineral resources . They produce cosmetics and skin care products , including soaps , lotions , and even facial mud , as well as fertilizer and industrial chemicals . Other companies export the raw minerals to countries across the globe . Who Am I ? My story is told in Genesis and takes place near Sodom , which is near the Dead Sea , where the tall salt formations look almost like people . I was warned that if I looked back , I would turn into a pillar of salt . Sure enough , I looked back and became a pillar of salt . Who am I ? Twenty-five percent of the Dead Sea is salt . That makes it 10 times saltier than the Mediterranean Sea . Many salt formations look very beautiful and decorative .
