A City Unlike Any Other There is a city in Israel unlike any other in the world . For centuries , its beauty and glory have inspired poets , musicians , and sages . While the city is thousands of years old , much of it is very new . Traffic jams sometimes occur as cars try to pass someone on a donkey that is trotting slowly along the winding streets . Shopping malls are built on top of ancient hills , and apartment buildings rise over the silent remains of a city that bustled 2 , 000 years ago . The city is Jerusalem—Yerushalayim . Over 3 , 000 years ago , King David made Jerusalem the capital and religious center of ancient Israel . After his death , his son , King Solomon , built the Holy Temple , or Beit Hamikdash , on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem to house the Ark of the Covenant . As it says in the Bible , “ I [ Solomon ] have built the House for the name of Adonai , God of Israel . And in it I have put the Ark , in which is the Covenant Adonai made with the children of Israel” ( 2 Chronicles 6 : 10–11 ) . In Jerusalem , sometimes you compete with donkeys for a parking space !
