But some questions are more difficult to answer , and Israelis struggle with them even today . Like Jews in other countries , Israeli Jews do not always agree on how to live as Jews . For example , nonobservant , or secular , Israeli Jews study the Bible and other holy texts to learn the culture , history , legends , and values of the Jewish people . But they do not want the government to tell them what they can and cannot eat , how—or if—they must pray , or how to spend their time on Shabbat , Yom Kippur , or Passover . Other Jews , among them very observant , or ultra-Orthodox , Jews called H . aredim , believe that traditional Jewish law , or halachah , should be the law of Israel . For example , the H . aredim want the Knesset to pass laws declaring that all stores owned by Israeli Jews must be closed on Shabbat , that all Jewish butchers must sell only kosher meat , and that Jewish men and women should pray separately at Israel’s holy places . Although these Jews are a minority , they have a strong influence in the Knesset . Because Israel does not separate religion and government , sometimes there are clashes between Jews with different beliefs . Do you think that restaurants in Israel should serve only kosher food ? Why or why not ? El Al , Israel’s airline , has transported millions of immigrants and tourists to Israel . Do you think it should be permitted to schedule flights on Shabbat and on other Jewish holy days ? Explain your answer .
