These are just some of the many questions the founders of Medinat Yisrael had to think about . Some questions were easier to answer than others . For example , because Israel is a modern democracy , people of all races and religions can become citizens , and their rights are protected by Israeli law . Because Israel is a Jewish state , Jewish holidays are national holidays . For instance , on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur schools and businesses close . And on Purim , adults and children dressed in costumes and masks parade through the streets of Israel . Israel’s Declaration of Independence proclaims that the values of the State of Israel are to be based on the lessons of “ liberty , justice , and peace that were taught by the Jewish prophets . ” Can you name two of our prophets ? The majority of Israeli Jews—about 60 percent—observe at least some religious traditions . For example , they may eat kosher food , attend a seder , and go to synagogue on the High Holidays . Twenty percent of Israeli Jews are nonobservant , or secular ; another 20 percent are Orthodox , or strictly observant of traditional Jewish laws and customs . As in other countries , there are differences among Orthodox Jews . Some—the modern Orthodox—are more liberal in their observance , and some—the ultra-Orthodox—are more traditional . Israelis of all races , religions , and beliefs must learn to live together in peace and harmony .
