National Symbols Israel’s unofficial national anthem is “ Hatikvah , ” which means “ The Hope . ” Long before Israel became independent in 1948 , the poem “ Hatikvah , ” written by Naphtali Herz Imber , had become the anthem of the Zionist movement . “ Hatikvah ” begins : Within the heart A Jewish spirit is still alive And the eyes look eastward Toward Zion . Our hope is not lost , The hope of two thousand years To be a free nation in our land In the land of Zion and Jerusalem . When I have to wait three months for summer vacation or two weeks for my birthday party it feels like forever . Can you imagine what it is like to hope and dream about something for 2 , 000 years ?
