In 1982 , Escalante took a class ofweak students and taught them advanced math . Nobody believed that these kids would pass the final exam . He worked long days and weekends with his students and most of them passed the difficult exam . However , the Educational Testing Service did not accept the grades . They believed that the students had cheated . Most of the 18 students took the test again and passed . Escalante showed these students that they could change the course oftheir lives if they studied and worked hard .
