KING of COMEDY He became the all-time King of Comedy . However , Charlie Chaplin's early life was no laughing matter . He was born in London in 1889 and was the younger son of two poor theater performers . At that time , life was hard for people who didn ' t earn much money . Charlie ' s father was often drunk and his mother was often sick in the hospital . So when Charlie was still very young , he and his brother had to take care of themselves . At a young age , Charlie found himself on the streets searching for food and living in workhouses * . Charlie performed on stage for the first time at the age of five . He appeared instead of his mother . She had lost her voice and couldn't perfonn . Charlie discovered that he was naturally funny and that it was easy for him to make people laugh . In 1914 , Charlie traveled to America with a British theater company and began acting in silent movies . This was when he thought of the costume that was to become his trademark * : a jacket that was too small , pants and shoes that were too large , a derby hat * , a mustache and a cane . He created the character the Little Tramp with these clothes . On the one hand , the Little Tramp was a poor man who always had problems . Charlie Chaplin's movies are still very popular today because of his ability to make people laugh through their tears .
