Section Task : Punchline Taking part in a debate You will take part in a small-group debate where you will discuss the statement "There is no such thing as universal humor . " Arrange to have the debate recorded on cassette or CD . The preparation and presentation of your team's argument in the debate will be assessed using the rubric on * W / T 7 El © 79 . I . Work in a group of six . The group is made up of two teams ( Team A and Team B ) with three speakers on each team . 2 . Team A will support the statement and argue that there is no such thing as universal humor . Team B will oppose the statement and argue that universal humor exists . You will be told which side of the argument to present . 3 . With the other two students on your team , decide who will be first , second or third speaker and prepare your argument ( both the argument of the team as a whole and the specific points each speaker will present ) . 4 . Submit a written draftof the argument in point form to the teacher for assessment . 5 . Find a partner group of six students . One of the students in the partner group will be chairperson of your debate and the other five students will be the judges . 6 . Present the debate to the judges in your partner group using your written draft . 7 . At the end of the debate , the judges will take a vote on who gave the stronger argument . In addition to assessment , both teams will receive general feedback from the judges in the partner group based on the feedback questions below . 8 . Submit the recording of the debate to the teacher for assessment . The following checklist shows what to pay attention to when your team presents the argument . ? The opening statement by the first speaker defines the issue and introduces the argument . ? The argument presented by the second speaker supports the argument and answers points raised by the other team . ? The argument presented by the third speaker answers points raised by the other team and sums up his / her team's side of the argument . ? Facts and examples are used to support the points presented . ? Suitable phrases are used to present ideas . ? Suitable connectors are used to connect ideas . ? The speakers keep to the time limit and do not interrupt others . Feedback Questions to Judges ? Which side gave the stronger argument ? Explain why . ? Which side gave the clearer argument ?
