Meet a Marine Biologist Mr . Yehoshua Neumann is a marine biologist . Smadar , one of our writers , interviewed him especially for our booklet . What topics do you think will be discussed in the interview ? Read the interview and compare your ideas with the topics that were discussed . Smadar ( S ) : Mr . Neumann , what is marine biology ? Yehoshua Neumann ( YN ) : Marine biology is the study of life in the sea . The word " marine" comes from the Latin word "mare , " which means " sea . " For example , a sailor is sometimes called a mariner , and everyone knows that a submarine sails under the sea . S : Why did you decide to study marine biology ? YN : When I was studying biology at the university , one of our projects was to examine a small , shallow area of water . I was surprised to find such an amazing variety of life without having to swim to the deep areas . I realized that you don't have to go into the depths to study marine life . S : What was your most frightening experience ? YN : My most frightening experience involved sharks . We were at a depth of 30 meters , busy counting starfish , when we suddenly noticed that there were about fifteen sharks around us . Sharks usually come because they are curious , and if you don't move or scare them , they will not hurt you . I was very excited to see the sharks so I carefully took out my camera to photograph them . When I finished the film , I noticed that everyone else had gone . Then I realized that I was almost out of air . I had to decide how I was going to get out of the water . I didn ' t have enough air to crawl on the sea bottom . So I decided to go up very slowly , turning all the time so I could keep my eyes on the sharks . I just hoped they wouldn't get a fright and that I wouldn ' t run out of air . It was quite an experience . S : What is your favorite marine creature ? YN : The forms of sea life I like best are corals , jellyfish and starfish . These creatures are fascinating , for several reasons . Even though they are biologically simple , they move , they catch food and digest it , they protect themselves , and they reproduce . S : Why is it important to study the sea ? YN : The more we know about the sea , the more we will be able to enjoy its benefits and also be able to protect it from dangers . For example , one benefit of the sea is that it provides us with fish to eat . However , there is a danger of overfishing , which may cause the disappearance of many species offish .
