Turning Magic into Real The following is a profile of J . K . She loved to daydream * and wrote stories , many about magical worlds and heroes . 2 When she was nine , Rowling was afraid of her new teacher , Mrs . Morgan . In Mrs . Morgan's class , the "best " pupils sat on the left . Mrs . Morgan told Rowling to sit on the right . At the end of the year , Mrs . Morgan sent Rowling to the left , but she had to change seats with her best friend . So , Rowling remembers , "In one short walk across the room I became clever but unpopular . " 3 Rowling studied French and Philosophy at university . In 1991 , after she finished university , Rowling went to Portugal and taught English . At this time , she began to write a story about a boy who finds out that he is a wizard * . This story later became the first Harry Potter book . 4 In 1994 , Rowling left Portugal and went to live in Scotland . During this time , she was very poor . She was divorced * and had to look after her baby daughter alone . However , she set a goal : to finish the Harry Potter book and to publish * it . Rowling sat at a cafe and wrote her book while her daughter slept . A year after finishing the book , a British publisher bought it . Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone * was a great success .
