Dogs barked and some even began to cry . Cats ran into the streets . Hens stopped laying eggs and started running around . Mice and rats came out oftheir hiding places and ran around in circles . Horses and cows became nervous and started to move around . Bees stopped making honey and left their hives . Birds made strange sounds . Nobody knew for sure why the animals were acting so strangely . Some people thought that something bad was going to happen . At 9 o'clock that night , there was a terrible earthquake . \ In places where there are many earthquakes , some people are sure that animals know when an earthquake is going to happen . Many farmers say that their animals always act strangely before an earthquake . In China , people use panda bears in zoos to predict earthquakes . 3 Scientists have tried to learn about the connection between animal behavior and earthquakes . But animal behavior is not so easy to understand because animals act strangely not only before earthquakes , but also at other times . The scientist Helmut Tributsch wanted to find out why animals act differently before earthquakes . He wanted to know what the animals felt and why they felt it . Tributsch believed that this information could help us predict earthquakes and save lives . 4 Before an earthquake , the earth sends out a lot of small particles that have electricity in them . The air becomes full of electricity . Tributsch learned that the extra electricity in the air makes the animals feel very uncomfortable . That is why they act strangely . IfTributsch ' s theory is right , scientists can check how much electricity is in the air . Then they will be able to tell if there is danger ofan earthquake .
