. Exercise 1 : Talk about the picture . Listen and number The Unit Guides provide suggested questions and activities for students to share about the picture . After class discussion, there is an audio file to be played and students number the picture according to what they hear . NOTE * the audio script includes the target vocabulary words in bold . You may emphasize * these words to students as they listen . Pairs work challenge : Students work with a partner to give clues ( “It is big . ” “There are four . ,” etc . ) . The partner can then guess which item is being described . The partners then switch roles . Exercises 2 - 4 1 : These are varied tasks to help with receptive and productive language . They are explained in each section of the Unit Guide . Phonics Students work in their books . Details for all activities are in the individual Unit and Part sections that follow . Student Book TIP * Repeat the names of the activities out loud to students as you work on them . Students * will not only be exposed to the words, they will also identify these words globally, recognizing them at a glance . Exercise 1 : This exercise presents a new phonics concept with a list of decodable words and illustrated meanings . Play the audio and have the students listen for the new sounds, blends, or digraphs . Exercise 2 : In the second exercise, students typically practice reading an expanded list of vocabulary words containing the new sound, blend, or digraph . Exercises 3 - 8 : Students practice the new phonics concept and review previously learned phonics concepts through a series of engaging exercises . Extra Practice Page : The Extra Practice page is an integral part of the Lesson, as it emphasizes phonemic awareness of the sound, blend, or digraph, strengthens the vocabulary - phonetic connection, and provides additional writing practice . The practice page is meant to be part of the learning and not an optional activity .
