The Review heading contains phonics concepts reviewed in the current phonics lesson . New words for the sounds are introduced on the page . Students should be introduced to the sound and then read the new words presented on the page . The exercises in the book then offer practice for identifying, reading, and writing the sound in both familiar and new words . Each phonics lesson is followed by an Extra Practice page for students to reinforce the newly learned phonics concepts . TIP * Call out words to students . Have them show thumbs - up ( beginning ) , thumbs - down ( end ) , * thumbs - sideways ( middle ) , or a fist ( no sound ) to show where in the word they hear the new sound . Reading and Writing Student Book Learning how to read opens doors to knowledge, information, and enjoyment . Learning to read should be fun for students and My Way uses activities, texts, and interactive exercises to help students fall in love with learning and mastering this foundational skill . The coursebook focuses not only on decoding skills, but also on comprehension helping students to become fluent and confid ent readers . There are multiple styles of texts in the student book that practice the new phonics sounds and familiar words . The texts are designed so that students can independently decode and understand them . Words that students can decode but do not yet know o r words that they are extremely familiar with but cannot yet decode are marked with asterisks . These words are translated directly under the text to promote student independence, to develop mastery of new words, and to increase student exposure to written l anguage . The texts are followed by reading comprehension exercise s to ensure students read carefully and understand what they are reading . These are followed by encoding activities that help students develop their writing skills . As students move through the book, they are exposed to increasingly more sophisticated writing tasks to move from word completion to sentence completion to independently writing complete sentences . Reader The Reader provides students with additional opportunities to practice their decoding, comprehension, and writing . Each part of the student book has two associated texts in the reader exposing students to experiences and information from both the country they are learning about and about Israel .
