17 Why Apples ? We all know that apples are healthy to eat . But do you know these facts about apples ? THE BIG APPLE New York City is called The Big Apple . How did it get this name ? One story is that all the farmers in the state of New York went to the big city to sell apples . That is how New York City became The Big Apple . Another story is that the name came from a popular club for jazz singers called Big Apple . For many years people forgot about the name . Then , in the 1970 s , they decided to use the name again to bring more tourists to New York City . They made a logo for The Big Apple and put it on shopping bags , T-shirts , stickers and magnets . NEWTON AND THE APPLE One day a man was sitting under a tree . An apple fell and hit him on his head . At that moment he understood why the apple fell to the ground . The man was Sir Isaac Newton and that is how he discovered the law of gravity . He explained that gravity makes things fall down . APPLE COMPUTERS In 1976 Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak tried to think of a name for their new company . They decided to call the company Apple because Steve Jobs thought apples were the most perfect fruit . They also needed a logo . At first they had a picture with Isaac Newton , a tree and the words Apple Computer . Then they decided to use a picture of an apple . Steve Jobs thought it looked like an orange , so they changed it to the logo we know today .
