12 Kids Can Make a Difference ECO NEWS Recycling The World Around Us Adopt an Animal Letters Contact Us Hello ECO NEWS , My name is Janine . I live in Costa Rica in the middle of a beautiful rainforest . Rainforests have tall trees . The weather is mostly warm and it rains a lot . In some rainforests it rains more than 2 . 5 centimeters every day of the year . Rainforests are important because they give the earth a lot of oxygen . When I was nine years old , my friend and I wanted extra money , so we painted rocks and sold them . Then we decided to do something important with the money . That’s when we had the idea to start saving the rainforest . In 1999 we started Kids Saving the Rainforest ( KSTR ) . KSTR has many projects : n We teach people all over the world about the rainforests and the animals in them . n We opened a shop in the corner of a restaurant at a hotel . Today we have a gift shop . We use the money we get to save the rainforest . n We built a center to look after sick animals . When the animals are better , we put them back in the rainforest . n We planted 6 , 500 trees . n We opened a library with more than 2 , 000 books . n We have a camp every Saturday to teach children about the rainforests . We can do a lot because volunteers and friends help us . I believe that kids can make a real difference . You can help too . Join us and do something to save the world .
